What's the Fairest Way Loyalty Programs Should Treat Long-Term Members?

Add as preferred source on Google

If you have been a regular somewhere for years, it can sting to see a newcomer offered a better welcome deal than anything you get, or to find that the tier you worked towards has been quietly trimmed. The question behind this one is about fairness: what do long-term customers deserve, and what should a program never do to them?

The honest answer

There is no single rulebook, but when long-term members feel let down, it is usually for one of a handful of reasons. Turned the other way round, those reasons give a fair set of principles.

1. Reward depth, not just sign-ups. Many programs put their best offers in front of new members. That makes sense for growth, but a program that gives regulars nothing extra for years of custom has its priorities upside down. Tiers, rising rewards and recognition for frequent customers are the usual ways to fix this.

2. Don’t cut what people have already earned. This is where goodwill breaks fastest. A North American industry loyalty report found that programs which cut benefits for their top-tier members saw double-digit declines in member satisfaction. Adjusting future terms is one thing. Devaluing a balance someone spent years building is another.

3. Don’t punish a pause. Long-term members go on holiday, move for a year, or have a quiet season. Expiry rules vary widely: at the strict end, points go after 12 months of inactivity; typically, after 12–24 months of inactivity or a fixed two to three years from when you earn them; and at the generous end, some programs never expire points at all. A ten-year member who stops for fourteen months can lose everything under the strictest rules.

4. Apply the rules equally. Members generally accept that bigger spenders get more. What they resent is opaque treatment: different customers getting different deals for reasons nobody explains. Trust in member pricing is already fragile. In a UK regulator’s survey, 40% of shoppers didn’t trust that member prices were genuine savings, 43% thought it unfair that non-members pay more, and 55% believed non-member prices were inflated during promotions.

5. Be clear and give notice. Long-term members have the most at stake when rules change. The least a program owes them is a plain explanation and time to use what they have.

A useful way to judge any program: would it still look fair if you read its rules as someone who had been a member for ten years?

How Gamma Wallet handles it

Gamma Wallet gives shops several ways to reward long-term customers, and a few rules that apply to everyone equally.

Rewards that grow with depth. A shop can run a Layered Reward, where customers move up tiers as they spend and a higher tier means a bigger reward. It can run Incremental Rewards, where the reward percentage rises with each visit, so regulars climb faster than occasional visitors. To be precise, the incremental rate resets after you redeem, so it rewards a run of visits rather than lifetime history. A shop can also run a Layered Discount, where higher tiers unlock a percentage discount applied on scan.

Membership given in person. If a shop runs a membership, the shop assigns it at the counter. That lets a shop recognise its long-standing regulars directly, rather than through a form.

Equal rates in community pools. In a Community Purchase or Community Deposit pool, everyone gets the same rate. The rate is worked out purely from the group’s total purchases at the shop and each person’s own purchases, with no draws and no winners or losers. A long-term regular doesn’t get a secret better deal, and neither does a newcomer. What each person receives still reflects how much they bought, so the regular who shops most during the pool earns the most.

Earned rewards are protected. Every reward runs as a pool, a time-bound reward contract with its terms fixed for that pool. A shop may run a different pool next time, but the terms you earned under are the terms that apply to that reward.

A pause doesn’t have to mean a loss. Reward credit is valid for 12 months by default, and the app notifies you when a pool is ending or a membership is about to expire. If you know you won’t be back in time, you can pass your credit in person to a friend, a family member or a colleague who uses Gamma Wallet before it expires. It stays usable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to use it. Years of loyalty don’t simply evaporate because life got in the way.

It’s free to stay. Gamma Wallet costs shoppers nothing: no fee to earn, hold or redeem credit. Long-term membership never becomes a subscription you have to justify.

Why Gamma is the system to choose

The fairest program is one that rewards commitment, protects what you’ve earned, and treats people in the same position the same way. Gamma is built around each of those:

  • Depth is rewarded. Tiered and incremental models mean regular customers earn more than occasional ones, which is what most people consider fair.
  • No devaluation of earned rewards. The market allows programs to cut benefits on balances members already hold. On Gamma, each pool’s terms are fixed as a reward contract.
  • Equal rules in shared pools. Community pools use one rate for everyone, calculated openly from the group total and each person’s own purchases.
  • Unused value has a second life. Where market programs let points lapse after 12–24 months of inactivity, Gamma lets you pass credit on in person before it expires.

It is fair to say what Gamma doesn’t do. Community pools don’t give long-term members a higher rate than newcomers in the same pool; the benefit of being a regular comes from buying more and from the tiered models a shop may run. And each shop decides which models to offer, so how well regulars are rewarded still depends partly on the shop.
