What's the Connection Between Loyalty and Customer Service Quality?

Add as preferred source on Google

The shops you keep going back to are not always the ones with the most generous card. Often they are the ones where someone remembers your order, fixes a problem without fuss, and treats you the same on a busy Saturday as on a quiet Tuesday. So the real question is whether a loyalty program makes a shop treat you better, or whether it is sometimes used instead of treating you well.

The honest answer

Service comes first. A loyalty program mostly strengthens a relationship that good service has already built. It rarely creates one from nothing.

The research is fairly consistent on this. A large academic review of three decades of loyalty-program studies found that programs reliably increase repeat buying, but are much weaker at changing how people feel about a business. A global consumer survey covering 33 countries found the same split from the other side: most people said they spend more with brands they feel loyal to, yet 71% said loyalty schemes themselves do not make them loyal.

How much programs move behaviour also depends on who you ask:

  • Lowest: in European surveys, only about 24–35% of members say programs make them spend more.
  • Typical: US and global self-reported surveys put it higher, around 57–73%.
  • Highest: 85% of US members say they are more likely to keep doing business with brands that have a program.

Those are self-reported answers, and people who join programs are often a shop’s best customers already. The safe reading is this: a program nudges the habit, and the experience decides the relationship.

In practice, a loyalty program can help or hurt service quality.

Where it helps. A program gives a shop a record of who its regulars are. That makes it easier to recognise people, thank them properly, and notice when someone who used to come in every week has stopped coming.

Where it hurts. A program can also add friction at the counter: a card that won’t scan, rules the staff can’t explain, a reward the customer expected but that quietly expired. In US surveys, around four in ten members say they are frustrated by expiring points, and about half say rewards take too long to earn. Each of those frustrations tends to land on whoever is standing behind the till, not on the people who designed the scheme.

There is also a difference of scale. Large chains use loyalty data partly to stand in for a relationship they cannot have with millions of shoppers. A small local shop usually has the relationship already. It knows many of its customers by face. What it often lacks is a simple way to keep track of them and reward them without extra work.

How Gamma Wallet handles it

Gamma Wallet will not make a shop friendlier. That part is up to the people behind the counter. What it tries to do is keep the reward from getting in the way of the service, and give the shop a clearer view of the people it serves.

The counter moment stays short. To earn, you show the QR code in your app and the shop scans it. The reward is recorded as a reward contract, so there is no card to lose and no stamp to forget. To redeem, the shop scans your code, or you scan the shop’s code and enter the amount, and the credit comes off your balance instantly. Less time goes on the mechanics, which leaves more time for the conversation.

The shop gets a free view of its Client Community. Every shop on Gamma has a CRM and Client Groups included free, on every plan. The shop can see who its regular clients are in one place and group them, for example to reach the people who come in most often. Push and in-app notifications are free too, so a shop can let its regulars know when a new reward pool starts.

Fewer surprises for you. Your reward credit is valid for 12 months by default, and the app notifies you when credit arrives, when you reach a new reward level, when a membership is about to expire and when a pool is ending. If you know you won’t use your credit in time, you can pass it in person to a friend or family member who uses Gamma Wallet before it expires. It stays usable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to spend it. So a reward is far less likely to turn into an awkward conversation at the till.

Membership stays a human moment. If a shop runs a membership, the shop assigns it to you at the counter. It is something the staff give you in person, not a form you fill in on your own.

You are not a data profile. Signing up asks for a nickname, a verified phone number, an email and a password. There is no real name, no date of birth and no bank card to link, because Gamma is never part of the payment. The shop knows you as a regular, not as a dataset.

Why Gamma is the system to choose

If the service is poor, no loyalty program will fix it, and you should be wary of any scheme that is presented as a substitute for decent treatment. The market evidence says the same thing: programs shape habits more than feelings. So the right question for a shopper is whether a program supports good service or distracts from it.

Gamma is built to support it, in three ways:

  • It removes the friction that damages service. No cards, no manual stamps, instant redemption, and rewards that don’t silently disappear. Those are the moments where most loyalty-related complaints happen.
  • It gives small shops the tools that large chains pay for. Small-business loyalty software commonly costs nothing on capped free tiers, around €25–75 a month typically, and €170–200 a month at the high end. On Gamma, the CRM and Client Groups are always free, and every reward model is free for up to 33 clients.
  • It rewards the community a good shop builds. With Community Loyalty, a shop can run pools where every customer’s reward grows as the group’s total purchases at that shop grow. A shop that looks after its regulars, and whose regulars bring others, can make the reward bigger for all of them.

None of this replaces a friendly face. It simply gives that friendly face better tools, and gives you a reward that is easy to earn, easy to use and hard to lose.
