Does Being Loyal Actually Build a Better Relationship With Brands?

Add as preferred source on Google

You have shopped at the same place for years, scanned the card every time, and collected the points. Somewhere along the way you might wonder whether any of that loyalty goes both ways. Does the business know you, value you, treat you differently from a stranger? Or is the “relationship” just a line in a database?

The honest answer

For most large programs, loyalty builds a habit more reliably than it builds a relationship.

The strongest evidence comes from a review of loyalty-program research spanning thirty years and hundreds of findings. Its conclusion was that programs do increase behavioural loyalty: people come back and buy again. They are much weaker at changing attitudinal loyalty, meaning how people feel about the business. In other words, a program can change what you do without changing how you feel.

Consumer surveys point the same way. How strongly members say programs affect them depends on where you ask:

  • Lowest: in European surveys, about 24–35% of members say programs make them spend more.
  • Typical: US and global self-reported surveys put it at around 57–73%.
  • Highest: in a US survey, 85% said they are more likely to keep doing business with brands that have a program.

Yet in a global study covering 33 countries, 71% said loyalty schemes do not make them loyal. And a UK regulator’s survey found that 76% of shoppers said member pricing had not changed where they shop. Most people collect points where they would shop anyway.

Why the gap between habit and feeling? A few reasons stand out:

  • Scale. A national chain has millions of members. It can recognise your purchases, but not you.
  • The exchange is transactional. Points are a payment for your repeat business. Useful, but not the same as being known.
  • Rule changes erode goodwill. A North American industry loyalty report found that programs which cut benefits for top-tier members saw double-digit declines in satisfaction. When the terms shift, members notice that the relationship was conditional.

None of this means loyalty is pointless. It means the emotional side of loyalty usually comes from somewhere else: the people, the service, the feeling of being a regular. A program at its best supports that. At its worst, it stands in for it.

That is why small local shops have an advantage here. The owner of a bakery or a barber’s often knows customers by name and by habit. The relationship is already there. What is often missing is a fair way to reward it.

How Gamma Wallet handles it

Gamma Wallet is built for small local shops and the people who keep coming back to them, which we call the shop’s Client Community.

Community Loyalty turns regulars into a group, not a list. In a Community Purchase pool, every customer’s reward percentage rises as the group’s total purchases at that shop grow during the pool window. The reward is worked out when the pool closes and becomes spendable then. Everyone gets the same rate, based on the group total and their own purchases, with no draws, no winners and no losers. In a Community Deposit pool, customers deposit value upfront for a set period, for example before a busy season, and a bigger group total means a bigger reward for everyone.

This changes the nature of loyalty a little. Your reward is no longer just between you and the shop. When your neighbour starts buying bread there too, your reward gets better, and so does theirs. Customers who bring others make everyone’s reward bigger, without any paid referral scheme.

The shop can see its regulars. Every shop on Gamma gets a CRM and Client Groups free. The shop can see who its regular clients are and group them, and send free push and in-app notifications when a new pool starts.

Membership is given in person. If a shop runs a membership, the shop assigns it to you at the counter. It is a small, human gesture rather than a form.

The reward is a promise, kept. Rewards are recorded as reward contracts. Your reward is reward credit: a promise of goods or services worth a stated amount at that shop, valid for 12 months by default. If you won’t use it in time, you can pass it in person to a friend or family member who uses Gamma Wallet before it expires. It stays usable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to use it.

It doesn’t ask for more of you than it needs. A nickname, a verified phone number, an email and a password. No real name, no date of birth, no bank card. The relationship is with the shop, not with a data profile.

Why Gamma is the system to choose

If the question is whether loyalty builds a better relationship, the honest answer is: not by itself. The research is clear that programs shape habits more than feelings. A card or an app will not make you care about a business that doesn’t care about you.

What a program can do is reward a relationship fairly and give it something to grow around. That is where Gamma aims to go further than the market standard:

  • Shared rather than solitary rewards. Standard points schemes give everyone the same small percentage, individually. Community pools reward the group, so being part of a shop’s Client Community has a visible benefit.
  • Terms that hold for the pool. Market programs can cut benefits on balances already earned, which is one of the fastest ways to damage goodwill. On Gamma, each pool is a reward contract with its terms fixed for that pool.
  • Built for the scale where relationships exist. Gamma is designed for independent local shops, where people are recognised by face. It gives those shops tools that used to belong to large chains, starting with a free tier for up to 33 clients.
  • A reward for coming back, not for being tracked. Minimal data, no card linking, and nothing to pay.

A loyalty program builds the habit of coming back. That is the habit side. The relationship side still depends on the shop. Gamma’s part is to make sure that when you are loyal, the reward is fair, shared and lasting.
