Which Loyalty Programs Give the Best Rewards?
If you are going to hand over your phone number and scan a card every time you shop, you want it to be for the program that gives back the most. But loyalty programs are built so differently that comparing them feels like comparing apples, air miles and free coffees. The real question is which kind of program is most rewarding, and for whom.
The honest answer
Loyalty programs fall into a handful of types. Measured as the share of your spending that comes back to you, they vary enormously:
| Program type | Lowest | Typical | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supermarket and coalition points schemes | 0.5% | 0.5–1% | about 3–4% (some pharmacy and beauty schemes) |
| Coffee-shop stamp cards (if completed) | about 7.7% | about 9–10% | about 11–12% |
| Bank card rewards and card-linked offers (EU) | about 0–0.3% (general card rewards) | 5–10% on a specific merchant offer | about 15% on a single offer |
| Airline and hotel programs (US valuations) | about 2–4% | about 5–7% | 10% or more, only with premium-cabin redemptions |
| Member-only prices (saving on the items concerned) | about 10% | 17–25% (UK regulator review) | 25% or more on individual lines |
On headline rates alone, stamp cards and member prices look like the winners, and points schemes look poor. But each type has a catch that the headline hides.
Stamp cards pay well, but only if you finish them. The 9–10% on a “buy nine, get the tenth free” card is earned only by customers who complete it, and most never do. Cards that take more than about two months to fill are rarely completed.
Member-only prices are real, but narrow. The saving applies to specific items for a limited time, and the regulator found that member prices were not always the cheapest option on the market.
Card-linked offers are small in the EU. Rules capping card fees mean bank card rewards are small, so the generous rates come only from individual shop-funded offers, and only on that one purchase.
Travel valuations assume expert use. They describe what a point is worth when redeemed well, often for premium flights. Many members redeem at lower value.
Points schemes are low but steady. They apply to almost everything you buy at that retailer, which is why a small percentage can still add up for a household’s weekly shop.
So “best” depends less on the program and more on you:
- If you buy the same small thing often (coffee, bread, lunch), a frequency-based reward like a stamp card usually gives the highest return, because you will actually complete it.
- If you spend larger amounts less often (a hairdresser, a garden centre, a bike shop), tiered rewards that grow with spend tend to suit you better than a card you will never fill.
- If you do one big weekly shop, a points scheme plus member prices on things you already buy is the realistic option.
- If a program charges a fee, it is only the best if your spending clears that fee first.
The best reward, in other words, is the highest rate you will realistically collect on spending you were going to do anyway.
How Gamma Wallet handles it
Gamma Wallet is not a single program type. It is a system in which each shop chooses the reward model that fits its customers, and your credit at all of them sits in one wallet. The models map closely onto the types above:
- Individual Instant Rewards work like a digital stamp card: a fixed reward, whether an amount, a free item or a percentage, earned on each purchase and redeemable on a later visit. Because the reward is earned each time rather than at the end of a long card, there is no half-filled card to abandon.
- Incremental Rewards raise your reward percentage with each visit, then reset after you redeem. They suit the frequent visitor.
- Layered Reward moves you up tiers as you spend, with a bigger reward at each tier. It suits the larger, less frequent purchase.
- Layered Discount unlocks a percentage discount by tier, applied when the shop scans your code.
- Membership gives perks to members, with the shop assigning membership at the counter.
- Direct Credit is prepaid store credit with a bonus: you pay the shop upfront and get more credit to spend there.
- Community Purchase and Community Deposit are a type most shoppers have not met before. During a pool window, every customer’s reward percentage rises as the group’s total purchases at the shop grow, and the reward is worked out when the pool closes. Everyone in the pool gets the same rate, based on the group total and their own purchase.
Apart from Layered Discount, rewards are credit for a future visit rather than money off today, and products are sold at full price. Each reward is recorded as a reward contract when you earn it and is valid for 12 months by default.
Why Gamma is the system to choose
The honest answer to “which program gives the best rewards?” is the one that fits your shopping pattern and that you will actually collect. Gamma’s advantage is that it doesn’t force one pattern on every shop. A café can run a frequency reward, a furniture restorer a tiered one, and a shop preparing for a busy season a Community Deposit pool, and you use the same app for all of them.
It is fair to say that Gamma does not set the reward rate; each shop does, so the size of the reward still depends on the shop. What Gamma adds on top of the market types is the community model, where the reward is not fixed but grows as more of the shop’s customers take part. No standard points scheme or stamp card does that.
And the reward you earn is more likely to reach you. Across the market, roughly half of loyalty rewards are redeemed. By our calculations, Gamma’s model, with credit tied to shops you already visit, simple to spend and passable to someone else in person before it expires, should keep redemption above that market average. It is free for shoppers, so there is no fee to clear first.
