What Should I Expect From a Top-Tier Loyalty Program?
Every loyalty program describes itself as generous, and most sign-up screens look the same. What people really want to know is where the bar sits: what does a genuinely good program do that an average one doesn’t, and how can you tell before you have handed over your details and months of purchases?
The honest answer
There is no official rating for loyalty programs, but the market gives you enough reference points to build your own. A top-tier program does well on six things. An average one usually does well on two or three.
1. It gives back a meaningful share of what you spend. Everyday supermarket points schemes return roughly 0.5–1% of spend, with some pharmacy and beauty schemes reaching about 3%. A coffee-shop stamp card of the “buy nine, get the tenth free” kind is worth about 10%, if you complete it. A strong program sits at the upper end of its category, not the bottom.
2. It pays out while you still care. Research on café stamp cards found that people who completed a 10-stamp card took, on average, somewhere between about two and three and a half weeks. Cards that take more than about two months to fill are rarely completed at all. A good program lets a regular customer reach a first reward within weeks, not seasons.
3. Redeeming is as easy as earning. Many programs make collecting effortless and spending awkward: minimum thresholds, vouchers posted out quarterly, rewards only on certain items. Across loyalty programs, somewhere between a fifth and a half of points are never redeemed. A good program is designed to be used, not to be forgotten.
4. Rewards don’t quietly lapse. Points commonly expire after 12–24 months without activity, or a fixed two to three years after you earn them. Expiry isn’t automatically unfair, but a good program tells you clearly when value will lapse and gives you a real chance to use it first.
5. It doesn’t cost more than it gives. Paid memberships in Europe typically cost roughly €40–100 a year. They can be worthwhile for heavy users. A top-tier program for everyday shopping should either be free, or clearly earn its fee back for the way you actually shop.
6. It asks for little and keeps its word. Most shoppers know stores collect their purchase data, but few read how it’s used. A good program asks only for what it needs and doesn’t change the value of your rewards after you have earned them.
Here is how the main reference points look across the market:
| What to check | Weak end | Typical | Strong end |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share of spend returned (points schemes) | 0.5% | 0.5–1% | about 3% |
| Time to a first reward (regular customer) | over 2 months | about 2–8 weeks | about 2–4 weeks |
| Points validity | 12 months of inactivity | 12–24 months of inactivity | no expiry |
| Annual fee | about €100 (premium tiers) | about €50–90 | free |
No program tops every row. The useful habit is to check the rows that matter for how you shop.
How Gamma Wallet handles it
Gamma Wallet is a free wallet that participating local shops use to run their loyalty programs. Here is how it measures against each standard.
Value. The shop chooses its reward model and sets the reward. It might be a digital stamp card with a fixed reward on each purchase, a reward that rises with each visit (Incremental Rewards), tiers that grow as you spend, or a Community Purchase pool, where every customer’s reward percentage rises as the group’s total purchases at the shop grow during the pool window. Rewards are reward credit: a promise of goods or services worth a stated amount at that shop, spent on a later visit.
Speed. With an Individual Instant Reward, credit is earned on each purchase and can be used on your next visit. There is no minimum number of stamps before anything happens. In community pools, the reward is worked out when the pool closes and becomes spendable then.
Redemption. At the counter, you show the QR code in your app and the shop scans it, or you enter an amount and scan the shop’s QR code. The credit is deducted instantly.
Validity. Reward credit is valid for 12 months by default. If you won’t use it in time, you can pass it on in person to another Gamma Wallet user before it expires. It stays usable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to spend it.
Cost. It is free for shoppers. There is no fee to earn, hold or redeem credit.
Data and rules. Sign-up asks for a nickname, a verified phone number, an email address and a password, plus country and language. There is no bank or card linking. Every reward is recorded as a reward contract, and everyone in a community pool gets the same rate, worked out from the group total and their own purchase.
Why Gamma is the system to choose
Measured against the six standards, Gamma sits at or above the strong end of the market on most of them, and it is honest about the rest.
- It is built to be used. Across the market, roughly half of loyalty rewards are redeemed. By our calculations, Gamma’s model should keep redemption above that average, because the credit is tied to shops you already visit, is simple to spend and can be passed on in person before it expires.
- The first reward comes early. Instant rewards count from the first purchase, so you are never facing a card that takes months to fill.
- Unused value has somewhere to go. Credit valid for 12 months by default sits at the stricter end of the market range on paper. Where Gamma goes further is that you don’t have to lose the balance if you stop visiting: you can pass it in person to someone else before it expires, so the value still gets used at that shop.
- The fee row is zero. There is nothing to earn back.
- The rules are recorded. Reward contracts and one shared rate per pool leave no room for quietly revaluing what you have earned.
What Gamma doesn’t do is set the reward level for the shop. A generous shop will run a generous program, and a cautious one won’t. Gamma makes sure that whatever the shop offers is clear, easy to use and hard to lose.
