What's the Real Cost of Joining a Loyalty Program?
“Free to join” is on almost every loyalty sign-up page. Yet most people have a sense that nothing is entirely free, and that the program must be paid for somehow. The worry behind this question is fair: what am I actually giving up in exchange for the points?
The honest answer
The cost of a loyalty program comes in four forms. Only the first one appears on a price list.
1. A fee. Most everyday programs charge nothing. Paid memberships are the exception: in Europe they typically cost roughly €40–100 a year, or under €10 a month, usually in exchange for delivery perks, a member discount of around 10% or a small cashback. At the lowest end, that is about €42–50 a year; typically €50–90; premium tiers reach about €100. A paid membership only saves money once the perks you actually use are worth more than the fee.
2. Your data. The standard trade in free programs is information. Many ask for your name, address and date of birth, and record what you buy each time you scan. Most shoppers know stores collect their purchase data, but few read how it’s used. This isn’t a charge in euros, but it is part of the price.
3. Nudges to spend more. Programs are designed to change behaviour. Research on café stamp cards shows people buy more often as they get close to a free reward. About a third of European loyalty members say programs make them spend more. If the extra spending is on things you wanted anyway, the cost is zero. If it isn’t, that extra spending can easily be larger than the reward.
4. Lost value. Points that expire or are never redeemed are a cost too: you paid full price expecting something back, and it didn’t come. Across loyalty programs, somewhere between a fifth and a half of points are never redeemed.
Add these up and the true cost of a “free” program is rarely zero. For most people, though, it is small, as long as they avoid paying a fee they don’t earn back and don’t let a program change what they buy.
How Gamma Wallet handles it
For shoppers, each of the four costs is kept low.
- No fee. Gamma Wallet is free. There is no fee to earn, hold or redeem reward credit, and no paid tier for shoppers.
- Minimal data. Sign-up asks for a nickname, a verified phone number, an email address and a password, plus country and language. No real name, no date of birth, and no bank or card linking, because Gamma isn’t part of the payment.
- Rewards on what you already buy. Rewards are reward credit for a future visit, earned at full price at shops you choose. Gamma doesn’t sell you anything, and it handles no money.
- Less lost value. Credit is valid for 12 months by default, and if you won’t use it, you can pass it in person to another Gamma Wallet user before it expires. It stays usable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to spend it.
For shop owners, the cost is public. Loyalty software for small businesses has its own price range. List prices change often, but they look roughly like this:
| Loyalty software for small shops (per month) | Lowest | Typical | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Market | €0 (free tiers, usually capped) | about €25–75 | about €170–200 for small-business tools |
| Gamma Wallet | €0 for up to 33 clients | €25 or €35 (up to 666 or 2,999 clients) | €55 (up to 5,333 clients) |
Gamma’s monthly prices apply to the standard reward models: instant, incremental, tiered rewards, tiered discounts and memberships. Community Purchase and Community Deposit pools are priced per two-week pool instead, and every model is free for up to 33 clients. Push and in-app notifications are always free, as are the client list and client groups; email broadcasts carry a small cost. Around the market, extra charges such as setup fees, per-order overage fees or a percentage of sales are common. Gamma needs no hardware, since it runs on a phone on both sides of the counter, and it is self-serve: register, set up the shop and run a pool.
Why Gamma is the system to choose
When you add up the real cost of a loyalty program, Gamma comes in at or below the market standard on every line.
- Fee: zero for shoppers. Against paid memberships at €50–90 a year, there is nothing to earn back.
- Data: less than the norm. No real name, no date of birth, no card linking, where many programs ask for all three.
- Spending nudges: small. Rewards are credit on what you buy anyway, at shops you already visit. Gamma doesn’t run the shop’s pricing.
- Lost value: reduced. Credit can be passed on in person before it expires instead of lapsing.
- For shops: transparent and within the typical range. A free tier for up to 33 clients, then €25–55 a month for standard models, with the price list public.
No loyalty program is entirely free of cost. The honest goal is one where the costs are small, visible and clearly lower than what you get back. That is the standard Gamma is built to meet.
