What Loyalty Program Features Matter Most to Real Customers?
Loyalty programs love to advertise their extras: exclusive events, surprise gifts, glossy tiers with metal-sounding names. But when you ask ordinary shoppers what makes a program worth using, the answers are much plainer. The real question behind this one is: which features actually change whether a program is worth my time?
The honest answer
When you look at what shoppers complain about and what they say they value, a short list of features comes up again and again. None of them is glamorous.
1. Easy redemption. This is consistently near the top. In one US survey, 55% of consumers said easy redemption was what they valued most. It makes sense: a reward that is awkward to claim is often never claimed. Across loyalty programs, somewhere between a fifth and a half of points are never redeemed.
2. Getting to a reward quickly. In a US consumer survey, about half of respondents said rewards take too long to earn. The research backs up the frustration. Stamp cards that take more than about two months to fill are rarely completed, while people buy more often as they get close to a free reward. A program that pays out early keeps people engaged; one that pays out in a year loses them.
3. A reward worth having. Value still matters, but most shoppers have modest expectations. Most supermarket points schemes give back roughly 0.5–1% of what you spend, and a classic “buy nine, get the tenth free” coffee card is worth about 10%, but only if you fill it.
4. No nasty surprises on expiry. In a US survey, about four in ten consumers said they were frustrated by expiring points. Points commonly expire after 12–24 months without activity, or a fixed two to three years after you earn them. What people object to is less the rule itself than not knowing about it until it is too late.
5. Respect for personal data. Concern about data varies a lot depending on how the question is asked:
- Lowest: in the UK, only 7% of people who don’t join supermarket schemes say data concerns are the reason.
- Typical: around 30–40% say they are worried about privacy in loyalty programs or distrust member prices (UK and US surveys).
- Highest: 62% of Europeans say they don’t feel in full control of the data they share online (a general figure, not specific to loyalty).
Most shoppers know stores collect their purchase data, but few read how it’s used. A program that asks for less has less to explain.
6. Stable rules. Members notice when programs cut benefits. A North American industry loyalty report found that cutting benefits for top-tier members led to double-digit declines in satisfaction.
7. Convenience. The direction of travel is clearly towards phone-based programs rather than plastic cards. It is worth adding one caution: the UK competition regulator has pointed out that app-only schemes can disadvantage older shoppers and people without smartphones.
Notice what is missing from the list: exotic perks. For most people, a good program is one that is quick, clear, fair and easy to use.
How Gamma Wallet handles it
Here is how Gamma Wallet deals with each of those features, one by one.
Easy redemption. At the counter, the shop scans the QR code in your app, or you scan the shop’s code and enter an amount. The credit is deducted instantly. There are no vouchers to print and no website to visit.
Speed to a reward. Each shop picks its reward model. A digital stamp card gives a fixed reward on each purchase, redeemable on a later visit. With Incremental Rewards, the percentage rises with every visit and resets after you redeem. In a Community Purchase pool, the reward is worked out when the pool closes and becomes spendable then.
Value. Rewards are reward credit: a promise of goods or services worth a stated amount at that shop, spent on a later visit. In community pools, every customer’s reward percentage rises as the group’s total purchases at the shop grow, and everyone gets the same rate, worked out from the group total and their own purchases.
Clear expiry. Reward credit is valid for 12 months by default, and you can see in the wallet when your credit expires. The app notifies you when a pool is ending and when a membership is about to expire. If you won’t use your credit in time, you can pass it in person to another Gamma Wallet user before it expires; it stays usable at the same shop and they have 30 days to use it.
Data. Sign-up asks for a nickname, a phone number verified by SMS, an email and a password, plus country and language. No real name, no date of birth, and no bank or card linking. Gamma never sees your payment, because it is not part of it.
Stable rules. Every reward runs as a pool: a time-bound reward contract with its terms fixed for that pool.
Convenience. One account holds your balance at every participating shop, and the app shows offers from participating shops within about 5 km, plus a map of shops. It is free for shoppers.
To be fair on the convenience point, Gamma is app-based. You need a smartphone to use it.
Why Gamma is the system to choose
If you rank features by what real customers say matters, Gamma is built around the top of the list rather than the extras:
- Redemption is a scan, not a process. Across the market, roughly half of loyalty rewards are redeemed. By our calculations, Gamma’s model, with credit tied to shops you already visit, simple to spend and passable to someone else in person before it expires, should keep redemption above that market average.
- Reward models that pay out early. Shops can choose models that reward from the first visit rather than after months of collecting.
- Expiry that isn’t a dead end. Where most programs let unused points lapse, Gamma shows you in the wallet when your credit expires and gives you a way to pass credit on in person.
- Less data than the norm. No card linking and no date of birth, at a time when privacy worries run from a small minority to a majority depending on how you ask.
- Rules that hold for the pool. No mid-pool changes to what you’ve already earned.
Gamma doesn’t offer glamorous extras, and it doesn’t claim to. It focuses on the plain features that decide whether a program gets used.
