Are Loyalty Program Perks Consistent or Always Changing?
You joined a program because the deal looked good. A year later you earn fewer points per euro, the reward you were saving for costs more, or the perk that made you sign up has quietly gone. The worry behind this question is simple: can I rely on what a loyalty program promises, or will the rules keep moving under me?
The honest answer
Most loyalty programs change over time, and the changes rarely favour the member. That does not make every change unfair. Costs rise and businesses adjust. But it does mean the perks you see on the day you join are a snapshot, not a guarantee.
The changes usually come in a few familiar forms:
- Lower earn rates. You earn fewer points for the same spend. At least one large pharmacy and beauty points scheme has recently cut its return from about 4% of spend to about 3%.
- Higher redemption prices. The same reward needs more points, so each point is worth less. This is what people usually mean by “devaluation”.
- Tier and benefit cuts. Perks for top members are trimmed, or the spend needed to keep a tier goes up.
- Stricter expiry. Points that used to last longer lapse sooner, or inactivity rules are tightened.
- Short-lived offers. Some perks were never meant to last. A UK regulator review found that member-only supermarket prices typically ran for about 17–26 days.
Expiry rules on their own vary a great deal across the market:
| Expiry rule | Lowest | Typical | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|
| How long points last | 12 months of inactivity | 12–24 months of inactivity, or a fixed 2–3 years from when you earn them | No expiry at all in some programs |
Members do notice when things get worse. A North American industry loyalty report found that programs which cut benefits for their top-tier members saw double-digit declines in member satisfaction. There is, however, no reliable figure for how many shoppers have personally lived through a devaluation, so be wary of anyone quoting one.
The practical lesson for a shopper is to treat points as something to use, not something to hoard. The longer a balance sits, the more exposed it is to a rule change, and the more likely it is to lapse. Reading the terms once when you join, and again when a program emails you about “changes to your membership”, is worth the five minutes.
How Gamma Wallet handles it
Gamma Wallet is built so that the terms of a reward are set down when the reward is created, rather than being a moving target.
Rules are recorded as reward contracts. Every reward a shop offers on Gamma runs as a pool: a time-bound reward contract with its terms fixed for that pool. When you earn during a pool, your reward is recorded under those terms. The shop cannot go back and change the rate for purchases you have already made.
Pools are time-bound, and that is honest. A pool has a start and an end. When it ends, the shop may start a new pool with different terms. It might be more generous or less generous, or it might be a different reward model entirely. That is a real change, and we won’t pretend otherwise. The difference is that the change happens between pools, in the open, not halfway through the period you were earning in.
Community pools are settled by a clear rule. In a Community Purchase pool, every customer’s reward percentage rises as the group’s total purchases at that shop grow during the pool window. The reward is worked out when the pool closes and becomes spendable then. Everyone gets the same rate, calculated from the group total and their own purchases, with no draws and no winners or losers. In a Community Deposit pool, customers deposit value upfront for a set period, and again a bigger group total means a bigger reward for everyone.
Your credit has a clear validity. Reward credit is valid for 12 months by default, and each shop can set its own period. You can see in Gamma Wallet when your credit expires, and you will get a notification when a pool is ending and when a membership is about to expire, so the dates are not buried in small print.
If you can’t use it, you can pass it on. In most programs, points you can’t use simply die. On Gamma, if you know you won’t use your reward credit in time, you can pass it in person to another Gamma Wallet user, such as a friend, a family member or a colleague, before it expires. It stays usable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to spend it. The value is used rather than lost.
The price to you doesn’t change, because there isn’t one. Gamma Wallet is free for shoppers: no fee to earn, hold or redeem credit. There is no membership fee that can rise next year.
Why Gamma is the system to choose
If the question is “will the perks stay the same forever?”, the honest answer for any program, Gamma included, is no. Shops change their offers, and a shop on Gamma can run a different pool next month. What matters is whether the rules can change under you, on rewards you have already earned.
That is where Gamma differs from the market standard:
- Terms are fixed for the life of a pool. The market norm allows earn rates and redemption prices to be changed on existing balances. On Gamma, what you earn during a pool is recorded under that pool’s terms.
- Validity is stated, not shifting. Market expiry rules run from 12 months of inactivity to several years, and they sometimes tighten. Gamma credit is valid for 12 months by default, each shop can set its own period, and you can see in the wallet when your credit expires.
- Unused value has somewhere to go. Across loyalty programs, somewhere between a fifth and a half of points are never redeemed. On Gamma, credit you can’t use can be passed on in person before it expires, so a lapse is not the only outcome for a balance you can’t spend yourself.
- Nothing to pay, so no fee rises. Paid memberships can change their price. Gamma costs shoppers nothing.
Gamma does not promise that every shop will always offer the same reward. It promises that the reward you earned is the reward you get.
