How Do Loyalty Programs Actually Save Me Money?

Add as preferred source on Google

Almost everyone carries a loyalty card or app. Fewer people could say what it has actually saved them. The honest question behind “how do loyalty programs save me money?” is really two questions: how much is a reward worth, and how much of it do I ever get to use?

The honest answer

Loyalty programs save you money in four main ways, and they are worth very different amounts.

  • Points on what you spend. You earn points per euro and trade them in later. This is the most common model and usually the smallest return.
  • Stamp cards. Buy a set number of coffees or haircuts, get one free. Generous on paper, but only if you finish the card.
  • Member-only prices. Lower shelf prices for anyone who scans their card. Real savings, but only on the specific items on offer.
  • Paid memberships. You pay a yearly or monthly fee in exchange for discounts, delivery perks or cashback. They only save money if you use them enough to cover the fee.

Here is roughly what each is worth across the market:

Type of program Lowest Typical Highest
Supermarket points schemes (share of spend returned) 0.5% 0.5–1% about 3–4% (some pharmacy and beauty schemes)
Coffee-shop stamp cards (if completed) about 7.7% about 9–10% about 11–12%
Member-only prices (saving on the items concerned) about 10% 17–25% on average (UK regulator review) 25%+ on individual lines
Paid memberships (what they cost you per year) about €42–50 about €50–90 about €100+ (premium tiers)

Two things quietly shrink these numbers.

Unused rewards. Across loyalty programs, somewhere between a fifth and a half of points are never redeemed. With stamp cards it is worse: cards that take more than about two months to fill are rarely completed at all. A reward you never redeem saved you nothing.

Expiry. Points commonly expire after 12–24 months without activity, or a fixed two to three years after you earn them. If you only visit a shop occasionally, a slow-earning card can lapse before it ever pays out.

There is also a behavioural catch. Research on café stamp cards shows people buy more often as they get close to a free reward. That is not a bad thing if you would have bought the coffee anyway. It is a bad thing if the program nudges you into spending you did not plan. And most shoppers simply collect points where they would shop anyway: in a UK regulator’s survey, 76% said member pricing had not changed where they shop.

So the realistic answer is: a loyalty program saves you roughly 0.5–1% on everyday points schemes, more with stamp cards and member prices, provided you actually redeem what you earn and the program doesn’t charge you a fee that eats the benefit.

How Gamma Wallet handles it

Gamma Wallet is built around the two leaks above: rewards that never get used, and rewards that are hard to use.

Your reward is credit for your next visit, at full price. When you buy something at a participating shop, the shop scans the QR code in your app and your reward is recorded as reward credit — a promise of goods or services worth a stated amount at that shop. Nothing is discounted today; you spend the credit on a later visit, like value set aside for next time.

Shops choose how that credit grows. Depending on the shop, your reward might work like a digital stamp card (a fixed reward each time), grow with every visit (Incremental Rewards), rise as you move up tiers, or come from a Community Purchase pool — where everyone’s reward percentage rises as the group’s total purchases at the shop grow. In a community pool, the more regulars shop there during the pool window, the bigger the reward for every one of them, with the same rate for everyone and no draws or winners.

Redeeming takes seconds. At the counter, you show your QR code and the shop scans it, or you scan the shop’s code and enter the amount. The credit comes off your balance instantly.

Nothing expires silently in a drawer. Reward credit is valid for 12 months by default. And if you know you won’t use it in time, because you’re moving or you’ve simply stopped going to that shop, you can pass it in person to a friend or family member who uses Gamma Wallet before it expires. It stays spendable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to use it. The value gets used instead of disappearing.

It costs you nothing. Gamma Wallet is free for shoppers: no fee to earn, hold or redeem credit. There is no bank card to link, because Gamma is never part of the payment — you pay the shop however you like, and Gamma records only the reward.

Why Gamma is the system to choose

If the question is “how do I actually save money?”, the answer comes down to three things: a reward worth having, a real chance of using it, and no costs that cancel it out. That is exactly where Gamma is designed to beat the market standard.

  • Using the reward is the norm, not the exception. Across the market, roughly half of loyalty rewards are redeemed and the rest go unused. By our calculations, Gamma should keep redemption above that market average, because credit is tied to shops you already visit, is simple to spend, and can be passed to someone else in person before it expires.
  • Rewards can grow beyond what you earn alone. Standard points schemes give everyone the same small percentage. In a Gamma community pool, your reward gets better when your neighbours shop there too.
  • No fee to recover. Paid memberships cost around €50–90 a year before they save you anything. Gamma is free, so every euro of credit is a real saving.
  • Value doesn’t vanish. Where most programs let points lapse, Gamma lets you hand credit in person to someone who will use it before it expires.
  • One wallet, not a drawer of cards. Every participating shop’s balance sits in one app, so you can see what you have and where.

Gamma won’t turn a small amount of spending into a large saving; no honest loyalty program can. What it does is make sure the reward you earn is one you actually get to spend.
