What Questions Should I Ask Before Trusting a New Loyalty Program?

Add as preferred source on Google

A new loyalty program asks for something before it gives you anything: your details, your attention, sometimes a fee. Most people join at the counter in ten seconds and read nothing. If you would rather know what you are agreeing to, a short list of questions covers almost everything that matters.

The honest answer

Here is a checklist that works for any program, from a coffee-shop stamp card to a supermarket app or a paid retail membership. Each question comes with what “normal” looks like in the market, so you can tell a fair deal from a poor one.

1. What does it cost me? Most programs are free to join. Paid memberships in Europe typically cost roughly €40–100 a year, or under €10 a month. At the lowest end that is about €42–50 a year, typically €50–90, and premium tiers reach about €100 or more. A paid program only saves you money if you use it enough to cover the fee.

2. What data do I hand over, and why? Some programs ask only for a phone number. Others want your address, date of birth, or a linked bank card. Most shoppers know stores collect their purchase data, but few read how it’s used. Ask what is collected and whether you can use the program without the optional parts.

3. What is a reward actually worth? Work it out as a share of your spend. Supermarket points typically return 0.5–1%, with some pharmacy and beauty schemes reaching about 3–4%. Coffee-shop stamp cards are worth about 7.7% at the lowest, 9–10% typically, and 11–12% at the most generous, but only if you finish the card.

4. How quickly can I use my first reward? A frequent café visitor might fill a stamp card in two to four weeks. Supermarket points can take two to eight weeks to reach the minimum redeemable amount, sometimes longer. Stamp cards that take more than about two months to fill are rarely completed.

5. When does it expire? Points commonly expire after 12–24 months without activity, or a fixed two to three years after you earn them. Some programs never expire points, and some lapse after 12 months of inactivity.

6. Can the rules change after I’ve earned? In many programs, yes: earn rates can drop, rewards can cost more points, and tiers can be trimmed. Look for how much notice is given and whether existing balances are protected.

7. How easy is it to redeem? Some rewards need a voucher, a minimum balance or a trip to a website. The easier the redemption, the more likely you are to use the reward. Across loyalty programs, somewhere between a fifth and a half of points are never redeemed.

8. What happens to rewards I can’t use? If you move away or stop visiting, can the value go anywhere, or does it simply lapse?

A program that gives clear answers to all eight is usually worth trusting. One that is vague on cost, data or rule changes deserves a closer look.

How Gamma Wallet handles it

Here is the same checklist, answered for Gamma Wallet as plainly as we can.

1. Cost: nothing. Gamma Wallet is free for shoppers. There is no fee to earn, hold or redeem reward credit.

2. Data: sign-up asks for a nickname, a phone number verified by SMS, an email and a password, plus your country and language. No real name, no date of birth, and no bank or card linking. Gamma never sees your payment data, because Gamma is not part of the payment. You pay the shop however you normally would.

3. Value: it depends on the shop, because each shop chooses its reward model. It might be a digital stamp card, a reward that rises with each visit, tiers that grow your reward as you spend, or a community pool where everyone’s reward percentage rises as the group’s total purchases at that shop grow. Rewards are reward credit for a future visit at that shop, not a discount on today’s price (except where a shop runs a Layered Discount).

4. Speed: again, it depends on the model. Stamp-card and tier rewards build with each purchase. In a Community Purchase pool, the reward is worked out when the pool closes and becomes spendable then.

5. Expiry: reward credit is valid for 12 months by default, and you can see in the wallet when your credit expires. The app notifies you when a pool is ending and when a membership is about to expire.

6. Rule changes: every reward runs as a pool, a time-bound reward contract with its terms fixed for that pool. A shop may run a different pool afterwards, with different terms. That is a real change between pools, and it is fair to know about it.

7. Redemption: at the counter, the shop scans your QR code, or you scan the shop’s code and enter an amount. The credit comes off your balance instantly.

8. Unused rewards: if you won’t use your credit in time, you can pass it in person to another Gamma Wallet user, such as a friend or relative, before it expires. It stays usable at the same shop, and they have 30 days to use it.

Before you take part in a pool, ask the shop how its current pool works: how long it runs and how the reward is worked out.

Why Gamma is the system to choose

Measured against the checklist, Gamma meets or beats the market standard on most points:

  • Cost: free, where paid memberships cost around €50–90 a year.
  • Data: a nickname, a verified phone number, an email and a password rather than a full profile, and no card linking.
  • Rule changes: terms are fixed for the life of each pool, rather than open to change on balances you have already earned.
  • Unused value: it can be passed on in person before it expires, rather than lapsing.
  • Redemption: a scan at the counter, not a voucher or a minimum balance.

Across the market, roughly half of loyalty rewards are redeemed. By our calculations, Gamma’s model, with credit tied to shops you already visit, simple to spend and passable to someone else in person before it expires, should keep redemption above that market average.

Where Gamma depends on the shop is value and speed. Each shop decides how generous its reward is and which model it runs. So the most useful thing you can do is the same with Gamma as with any program: ask the shop what its current pool offers, and decide whether it suits how often you visit.
